Protecting your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays is important all year round. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen, being sure to wear protective clothing and limiting your sun exposure at certain times of the day can all help reduce your risk of skin cancer, prevent premature ageing and protect your skin from damage. The Cancer Council promotes cancer prevention and provides support to people affected by cancer. One of the ways it promotes cancer prevention by advocating for the use of sunscreen to protect against the harmful effects of UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer.

The Cancer Council recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. It’s important to apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, ears, and any other areas that may be exposed to the sun, and to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.

In addition to using sunscreen, the Cancer Council also recommends seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes from UV radiation. It’s also important to be aware of the UV index, which indicates the strength of the sun’s UV radiation, and to take extra precautions when the UV index is high.
